A 2% critical chance bonus and a 2% critical-damage bonus answer different questions. Start with the action you need the character to perform, then compare the passive, active and travel benefits separately.

Which races changed?

The latest official notes list changes for all nine race groups. Eight receive numerical or ability redesigns; Night Elf receives movement and visual corrections. Skyborne has Alliance and Horde variants, which should not be treated as permission to choose every signature ability on one character.

This is a beta-patch comparison, not a universal best-race ranking. Class availability, trained abilities, equipment and encounter demands still matter.

OrcAxe Specialization becomes Savage: 1% critical strike chance without the weapon restriction.Use Shatter Curse to remove a current curse or bane. It no longer provides immunity to the next one, and Blood Fury is available less often.

TaurenEndurance trades its 1% hit component for 2% critical-damage/healing bonus. The new critical bonus affects critical results, while the shorter utility cooldowns can change your travel or control plan. The patch does not announce removal of Endurance’s existing health component.

Compare like with like

  • Critical chance: changes how often eligible actions critically strike. It is not a guaranteed percentage increase to all damage.
  • Critical damage and healing: changes the critical result, so the effect on an entire session depends on how often you crit and which actions qualify.
  • Haste: compare it with your class’s resource and cast constraints; do not treat the printed percentage as measured total throughput.
  • Timed utility: an eight-second window, dispel or movement tool has to be available when you need it. A longer cooldown can matter more than a passive comparison suggests.

Human: ability redesign

  • Sword Specialization becomes Ruthless: 2% critical strike chance without the old sword condition.

Our selection check: The passive bonus follows the character rather than a sword choice. Compare it with the utility you need from another race.

Dwarf: ability redesign

  • Earth Fury replaces Mace Specialization and grants 2% critical-damage/healing bonus.
  • Find Treasure gains an extra-item chance in most chests.

Our selection check: Extra critical damage and healing differs from extra critical chance. Find Treasure’s new loot chance has no published percentage.

Night Elf: behavior and visual fixes

  • Quickness movement speed can now stack with other speed effects.
  • Shields no longer remain visible in Wisp Form.

Our selection check: Quickness now combines with other speed effects. The notes describe a stacking correction rather than a new numerical speed bonus.

Gnome: ability redesign

  • Eureka becomes a charge-free eight-second window and includes Power Word: Shield.

Our selection check: Plan around an eight-second activation window. Read the resource-specific tooltip for your class and confirm that the abilities you intend to use benefit.

Unresolved source wording: The official sentence about using Eureka while stealthed or invisible contains unclear wording. Check the live tooltip and current official clarification before relying on that interaction.

Skyborne: numerical and ability changes

  • Wind Blessed haste increases from 1% to 3%.
  • Skysight and Read Leyline can be used while moving.
  • Read Leyline has a 30-second minimum duration; official notes describe the previous minimum as 20 seconds.
  • Walk on Air cooldown decreases from 120 to 90 seconds.
  • More Elemental Convergence and Leyline spawn points are announced.

Our selection check: Check the abilities available to your faction variant. The current Read Leyline minimum is 30 seconds; sources disagree on its earlier duration.

Orc: ability redesign

  • Axe Specialization becomes Savage: 1% critical strike chance without the weapon restriction.
  • Blood Fury cooldown rises from two to three minutes.
  • Shatter Curse dispels Curses/Banes instead of providing immunity; its magic-damage reduction falls from 15% to 5%.

Our selection check: Use Shatter Curse to remove a current curse or bane. It no longer provides immunity to the next one, and Blood Fury is available less often.

Undead: proc and interaction changes

  • Touch of the Grave/Dead uses a 30% caster proc chance or 20% for Paladins, Rogues and Warriors, with a 25-second internal cooldown.
  • Its result no longer scales with Shadow bonuses or loses strength from lower-rank spells.
  • Will of the Forsaken is unavailable while Scatter Shot affects the character.

Our selection check: The internal cooldown limits how often the racial can contribute. Proc chance alone cannot predict your total damage across a fight.

Tauren: numerical and ability changes

  • Endurance trades its 1% hit component for 2% critical-damage/healing bonus.
  • Plainsrunning adds 3% mounted speed and needs enough movement each second; stutter-stepping is insufficient.
  • Cultivation cooldown drops from 60 to 15 minutes; War Stomp drops from 120 to 90 seconds.

Our selection check: The new critical bonus affects critical results, while the shorter utility cooldowns can change your travel or control plan. The patch does not announce removal of Endurance’s existing health component.

Troll: numerical change

  • Regeneration's health-regeneration bonus and in-combat continuation become 20% instead of 10%.

Our selection check: Compare ordinary recovery and in-combat regeneration separately. These changes concern Regeneration, a different ability from the Rapid Regeneration active.

Make a practical choice for your next session

For leveling, write down the interruption you want to reduce: recovery, travel, a dangerous pull or time spent waiting for a cooldown. For a dungeon, agree on your role and the utility already supplied by other players. For PvP, define whether you need an immediate escape, a dispel or a planned pressure window. These are different goals and can reasonably produce different race choices.

Open a class build after that decision. During the short stress test, choose something you can meaningfully observe rather than expecting permanent progression or a launch-name reservation. The event does not establish a measured race tier list.
