Choose the activity first, then choose the Hunter tree. A build that solves your solo recovery problem may leave out the control, group support or defensive options you want in another session.
Which Hunter build should you start with?
Our recommended starting points at the current beta cap are:
- Leveling — Beast Mastery: keep a dependable pet: Pet-supported ranged questing.
- Dungeon — Marksmanship: weapon damage and party support: Ranged DPS.
- PvP — Survival: create room to reposition: Trap control and defensive spacing.
These are editorial recommendations based on the current public talent records, not independently playtested rankings. Every allocation spends 21 points at level 30. A legal calculator tree does not confirm your trained spell ranks, equipment or live server behavior.
Leveling: Beast Mastery: keep a dependable pet

Why we recommend this starting plan
- The first investment protects the pet while later points develop pet and hawk damage. This makes the pet a central part of the plan rather than a disposable opening pull.
- Summon Hawk adds a Forever-specific decision: it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so these are competing uses rather than two buttons to stack together.
- Intimidation adds a deliberate control option at level 30. Its Bestial Swiftness prerequisite is included.
The allocated talents
Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Endurance Training — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–16: Focused Fire — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Levels 17–18: Deadly Aspects — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 19: Improved Revive Pet — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 20: Bestial Swiftness — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 21–25: Unleashed Fury — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Level 26: Summon Hawk — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 27–29: Ferocity — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 30: Intimidation — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Choose a manageable pull and track the pet's health before adding another enemy.
- Decide between Hawk and Arcane Shot rather than assuming independent cooldowns.
- Use Intimidation when control is useful; pet attacks must connect to deliver its stun.
All 21 points stay in Beast Mastery: this gives up Marksmanship range and efficiency and Survival trap investment. The level-30 budget permits only 3/5 Ferocity here. Choosing pet recovery and the Intimidation prerequisite leaves less room for passive critical chance.
When to choose another planIf pet debuffs interrupt your route, replace one Ferocity point with Improved Mend Pet 1/2; this remains a legal 21-point plan.
Dungeon: Marksmanship: weapon damage and party support

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Careful Aim makes Intellect relevant to attack power. Evaluate the whole item rather than treating Intellect as a useless secondary stat.
- Trueshot Aura supplies a ranged-attack-power benefit to nearby party members; its value depends on who is in the party.
- Mortal Shots develops ranged critical damage while Efficiency helps the repeated-pull resource budget.
The allocated talents
Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Lethal Attacks — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–19: Careful Aim — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 20–22: Efficiency — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Levels 23–24: Improved Arcane Shot — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 25: Trueshot Aura — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 26–30: Mortal Shots — add 5, reach rank 5.
How to play around the choices
- Follow the tank's target and keep pet movement away from unpulled enemies.
- Check Aura coverage and whether the party actually uses ranged attack power.
- Use multi-target damage only on enemies the group intends to damage; preserve crowd control.
This allocation deliberately does not take Lone Wolf, so an active pet does not switch off a chosen talent. It also has no Beast Mastery pet improvements. There is no room for Scatter Shot or Rapid Recuperation. Compare actual Mana pressure before moving points, and recheck tier requirements after every swap.
When to choose another planFor a Multi-Shot/Aimed Shot emphasis, move one Mortal Shots point to Barrage 1/3. This preserves the 20 earlier-tier points required for Barrage.
PvP: Survival: create room to reposition
Beast Mastery 0 / Marksmanship 0 / Survival 21 · 21 points at level 30

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Entrapment develops trap-triggered movement control rather than a pure damage race.
- Surefooted and Survival Tactics invest in reliable contact and less time impaired; Deterrence provides a separate defensive decision.
- The final point shortens Trap and Deterrence cooldowns. It is a deliberate alternative to taking a new melee damage button.
The allocated talents
Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Improved Tracking — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–19: Entrapment — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Level 20: Deterrence — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 21–23: Surefooted — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 24: Clever Traps — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 25–27: Survivalist — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Levels 28–29: Survival Tactics — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 30: Survivalist's Discipline — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Use terrain and trap placement to make space before committing damage.
- Plan crowd control with allies and avoid immediately breaking their damage-sensitive effects.
- Treat a defensive cooldown as time to reposition, not a guarantee of immunity.
Only 3/5 Survivalist fits, and there are no Marksmanship shot bonuses or Beast Mastery pet bonuses. Improved Tracking needs the appropriate creature type tracked; it is not an unconditional damage bonus against every target.
When to choose another planFor a melee repositioning tool, replace Survivalist’s Discipline 1/2 with Strider Kick 1/1; the tree remains legal.
Hunter checks before you commit
- October 8 fixed Unleashed Fury not correctly increasing pet damage. Do not carry an older bug-based comparison into this recommendation.
- Improved Arcane Shot does not reduce cooldowns of other abilities that share Arcane Shot's cooldown. This build contains no Summon Hawk.
- October 8 corrected Entrapment diminishing returns and limited Frost Trap triggering to its initial activation. Do not promise repeated periodic roots.
For a dungeon, confirm the role with your group before changing talents. A healing or tanking recommendation here is for that stated role; a damage seat may need a different allocation and equipment. Read the alternative in the dungeon section rather than assuming one tree covers every assignment.
The PvP plan describes control, survival or support priorities at this point budget. It does not establish that every battleground, bracket or ability is available in the current beta. Check your character's trained abilities and the activity's current access before arranging a session.
Adjust one decision, then compare the whole session
Open the calculator link and save the initial allocation. Test against comparable opponents or pulls with the same gear, then change one decision. For leveling, include recovery and travel interruptions; for dungeons, include the group's pace and mistakes; for PvP, separate surviving an opener from contributing after it. Those observations help you decide whether this recommendation fits the activity you actually play.
Do not spend imaginary points on a higher-tier talent: the level-30 budget is 21. If a prerequisite changes after a patch, read the calculator's validation message before reusing an old link. The point-order panel on every build has been checked against the same rules as the calculator.
