Choose the activity first, then choose the Mage tree. A build that solves your solo recovery problem may leave out the control, group support or defensive options you want in another session.
Which Mage build should you start with?
Our recommended starting points at the current beta cap are:
- Leveling — Frost: build around Frozen windows: Controlled single-target questing.
- Dungeon — Arcane: manage stacks instead of draining dry: Ranged DPS.
- PvP — Frost: save a second answer: Frost control and defensive resets.
These are editorial recommendations based on the current public talent records, not independently playtested rankings. Every allocation spends 21 points at level 30. A legal calculator tree does not confirm your trained spell ranks, equipment or live server behavior.
Leveling: Frost: build around Frozen windows

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Frostbolt supports the regular cast while Nova and Ice Lance create a clear Frozen-target decision.
- Shatter rewards a real Frozen window; Ice Shards develops the critical-damage side of that investment.
- The level-30 final point adds Fingers of Frost. At rank 1 its proc treats only the next one spell as if the target were Frozen.
The allocated talents
Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Improved Frostbolt — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–17: Ice Shards — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Levels 18–19: Improved Frost Nova — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 20: Ice Lance — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 21–23: Piercing Ice — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 24: Frost Channeling — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 25: Ice Block — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 26–28: Shatter — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 29: Arctic Reach — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 30: Fingers of Frost — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Control one manageable target and keep room to retreat.
- Look for Frozen or Fingers of Frost windows before using the Frozen-target payoff.
- Use Ice Block with an exit plan: it also prevents movement and casting while active.
Frost Channeling and Arctic Reach are only partial investments. This is a control-first starting plan, not a fully optimized Mana or range allocation. There is no Improved Blizzard investment and no mass-pull recommendation. The final point goes to Fingers of Frost rather than Cold Snap.
When to choose another planFor a Frost cooldown reset rather than the proc mechanic, replace Fingers of Frost 1/2 with Cold Snap 1/1.
Dungeon: Arcane: manage stacks instead of draining dry
Arcane 21 / Fire 0 / Frost 0 · 21 points at level 30

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Arcane Focus and Subtlety support hit reliability and Arcane threat management in a group.
- Arcane Blast raises the cost of repeating itself while empowering other spells. Missile Barrage adds a reason to change the next cast rather than blindly keep stacking.
- Presence of Mind gives an instant-cast decision for an eligible spell. It is not a passive increase to every cast.

- Levels 10–14: Arcane Focus — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–19: Arcane Concentration — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Level 20: Arcane Blast — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 21–23: Arcane Impact — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 24: Arcane Geometry — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 25–26: Arcane Subtlety — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Levels 27–28: Arcane Meditation — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 29: Missile Barrage — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 30: Presence of Mind — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Watch Mana before starting another expensive Arcane Blast stack.
- Read the current buff and choose the next damaging spell deliberately; another damage spell consumes the Blast effect.
- Use Missile Barrage when available and coordinate recovery time with the group.
This stays entirely Arcane and gives up Frost control talents. Arcane Meditation is 2/3 within the budget. The build does not remove Arcane Blast's escalating cost. Your pull length and regeneration still determine whether continued stacking is affordable.
When to choose another planIf an extra active button is unwelcome, replace Presence of Mind 1/1 with Arcane Mind 1/5; test the passive approach against your actual resource needs.

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Permafrost develops chilling control, while Nova and Frostbite create Frozen opportunities for Ice Lance and Shatter.
- Cold Snap supplies a reset for other Frost cooldowns, giving this plan a different purpose from the leveling build's Fingers of Frost choice.
- Ice Block is a pause for survival, with the important cost of being unable to act while it is active.

How to play around the choices
- Create distance and coordinate control before spending the damage window.
- Keep track of which Frost cooldowns Cold Snap would actually restore before activating it.
- Avoid treating a Frozen target as permanent control; plan for the moment it ends.
Frostbite is a chance-based effect, not an on-demand root. Do not plan every exchange as if it must trigger. This allocation skips Fingers of Frost, Ice Shards and Arcane's Improved Counterspell. It trades those options for longer chills and the Frost reset.
When to choose another planIf you prefer a proc-based Frozen window to a cooldown reset, replace Cold Snap 1/1 with Fingers of Frost 1/2. Rank 1 affects one spell.
Mage checks before you commit
For a dungeon, confirm the role with your group before changing talents. A healing or tanking recommendation here is for that stated role; a damage seat may need a different allocation and equipment. Read the alternative in the dungeon section rather than assuming one tree covers every assignment.
The PvP plan describes control, survival or support priorities at this point budget. It does not establish that every battleground, bracket or ability is available in the current beta. Check your character's trained abilities and the activity's current access before arranging a session.
Adjust one decision, then compare the whole session
Open the calculator link and save the initial allocation. Test against comparable opponents or pulls with the same gear, then change one decision. For leveling, include recovery and travel interruptions; for dungeons, include the group's pace and mistakes; for PvP, separate surviving an opener from contributing after it. Those observations help you decide whether this recommendation fits the activity you actually play.
Do not spend imaginary points on a higher-tier talent: the level-30 budget is 21. If a prerequisite changes after a patch, read the calculator's validation message before reusing an old link. The point-order panel on every build has been checked against the same rules as the calculator.
