Choose the activity first, then choose the Priest tree. A build that solves your solo recovery problem may leave out the control, group support or defensive options you want in another session.
Which Priest build should you start with?
Our recommended starting points at the current beta cap are:
- Leveling — Shadow sustain for solo questing: Ranged damage.
- Dungeon — Discipline healer with Penance: Healer.
- PvP — Shadow control with Silence: Ranged pressure and control.
These are editorial recommendations based on the current public talent records, not independently playtested rankings. Every allocation spends 21 points at level 30. A legal calculator tree does not confirm your trained spell ranks, equipment or live server behavior.
Leveling: Shadow sustain for solo questing

Why we recommend this starting plan
- Spirit Tap makes repeated qualifying kills the center of the plan; its regeneration window gives a reason to finish an existing target before starting another pull.
- Mind Flay adds a controlled damage channel. The build leaves Improved Mind Flay empty to retain the base talent's stronger slow rather than exchanging it for more damage and range.
- The last point goes to Devouring Contagion for a cheaper Devouring Plague. Its spread mechanic is situational, so check nearby enemies before using it in a crowded camp.
The allocated talents
Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Spirit Tap — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–17: Shadow Focus — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Levels 18–19: Improved Shadow Word: Pain — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 20: Mind Flay — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 21–24: Improved Mind Blast — add 4, reach rank 4.
- Level 25: Vampiric Embrace — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 26–28: Shadow Weaving — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 29: Improved Mind Blast — add 1, reach rank 5.
- Level 30: Devouring Contagion — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Take manageable single-target pulls and check mana before committing to the next target.
- Use the regeneration window after a qualifying kill; compare time spent drinking between talent changes.
- Reserve healing resources for survival instead of treating this as a dungeon-healer allocation.
No Silence and no Discipline mana package. For a healer assignment, use the dungeon starting build instead.
When to choose another planWhen deliberate caster control matters more than recovery after solo kills, compare the Silence-focused PvP tree.
Dungeon: Discipline healer with Penance
Discipline 21 / Holy 0 / Shadow Magic 0 · 21 points at level 30
Open dungeon talent treeOpens the full tree with these ranks selected. Edit points, read current effects and share your own version.
Why we recommend this starting plan
- Penance is the level-30 endpoint: it gives this healer a targeted healing option after spending twenty points in Discipline.
- Improved Power Word: Shield and Soul Warding make shielding a deliberate part of the plan; Meditation and Inner Focus support longer pulls.
- Reaching Penance costs the opportunity to buy Holy's faster Heal casts or its deeper healing modifiers. Four ranks of Mental Strength are a tier-opening investment rather than a claim that Intellect always beats every healing stat.

Point order from level 10 to 30
This order reaches the allocation above while satisfying the current tier and prerequisite rules. Each level adds one point; it is a planning path rather than a timed leveling route.
- Levels 10–14: Twin Disciplines — add 5, reach rank 5.
- Levels 15–17: Improved Power Word: Shield — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Levels 18–19: Silent Resolve — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Levels 20–22: Meditation — add 3, reach rank 3.
- Level 23: Inner Focus — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 24: Mental Agility — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Level 25: Soul Warding — add 1, reach rank 1.
- Levels 26–29: Mental Strength — add 4, reach rank 4.
- Level 30: Penance — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Track the tank's current health and incoming damage before choosing a shield or direct heal.
- Leave room for Penance's healing sequence instead of assuming every part lands instantly.
- Use Inner Focus for a useful eligible cast and plan drinking breaks with the group.
This is a healer allocation. A Shadow damage assignment needs the leveling or PvP tree adapted to the encounter; do not queue as a healer solely because the class can heal.
When to choose another planFor a damage seat, begin with the Shadow leveling plan and review the encounter goals; keep this Discipline plan for the agreed healer role.
PvP: Shadow control with Silence
Discipline 0 / Holy 0 / Shadow Magic 21 · 21 points at level 30
Open pvp talent treeOpens the full tree with these ranks selected. Edit points, read current effects and share your own version.
Why we recommend this starting plan
- Silence provides a deliberate caster-control button, while Improved Psychic Scream shortens the cooldown of another control tool.
- Blackout is a chance-based bonus, so this plan does not rely on a stun occurring on demand.
- Mind Flay is left unmodified to preserve its stronger base slow. The points spent on control replace Spirit Tap's solo-kill sustain.

- Levels 20–21: Improved Psychic Scream — add 2, reach rank 2.
- Level 22: Mind Flay — add 1, reach rank 1.

- Level 29: Improved Mind Blast — add 1, reach rank 3.
- Level 30: Silence — add 1, reach rank 1.
How to play around the choices
- Keep a route to cover or retreat before committing a channel.
- Use deliberate control to interrupt an important enemy action rather than spending every control option together.
- Watch mana and coordinate target pressure; Vampiric Embrace does not make this a dedicated healer.
Less recovery between quest kills than the leveling build and no Penance. This is a starting skirmish plan, not a tested arena or battleground ranking.
When to choose another planIf your team needs dedicated healing support, start with the Discipline dungeon tree and review its defensive gaps for the match.
Priest checks before you commit
- Public talent data describes the October 10 hotfix cache; October 8 official notes were checked on October 13. Trained spell availability and future hotfixes must be checked in game. PvP recommendations describe player-versus-player priorities without claiming any particular bracket is open. Legacy talents are outside these 21 class points.
- October 8 adjusted Penance damage, healing and mana costs; do not judge this build from pre-patch screenshots or old efficiency claims.
For a dungeon, confirm the role with your group before changing talents. A healing or tanking recommendation here is for that stated role; a damage seat may need a different allocation and equipment. Read the alternative in the dungeon section rather than assuming one tree covers every assignment.
The PvP plan describes control, survival or support priorities at this point budget. It does not establish that every battleground, bracket or ability is available in the current beta. Check your character's trained abilities and the activity's current access before arranging a session.
Adjust one decision, then compare the whole session
Open the calculator link and save the initial allocation. Test against comparable opponents or pulls with the same gear, then change one decision. For leveling, include recovery and travel interruptions; for dungeons, include the group's pace and mistakes; for PvP, separate surviving an opener from contributing after it. Those observations help you decide whether this recommendation fits the activity you actually play.
Do not spend imaginary points on a higher-tier talent: the level-30 budget is 21. If a prerequisite changes after a patch, read the calculator's validation message before reusing an old link. The point-order panel on every build has been checked against the same rules as the calculator.
